Donington
held its first flower festival in 1966 on the 2,3 and 4th.
The organiser (secretary) Mrs Ruby Hunt and her friends Mrs
Wray, Mrs Litherland, Mrs Hilton, Mrs Wilkinson, Mrs James,
Mrs Thorlby, Mrs Robinson and other helpers from the village
and surrounding district made almost 100 flower arrangements.
Over £1,000.00 was raised for the church. An estimated
2,000 people visited the flowers festivaland a further 500
people attended a concert held on the Saturday night.
This
set a precedent for holding an annual flower festival. So
to coinside with the Spalding Tulip Parade the date of the
flower festival was moved to end of April begining of May.
For the past 4o years the flower ladies have put in 1000's
of hours, covering subjects as diverse as , Village Crafts,
Words of Wisdom and Famous Women.
If
anyone has a full list of themes that have been covered or
you can remember as few of the years please get in touch we
would like to add thelist to this page.
The
images and paper clippings on this page have been collected
from people in the village over the years. If you know the
owners of the orginal we will be happy to credit them.
